STEM + Art = STEAM

Carla C. Johnson
You might have noticed that STEM, or science, technology, engineering, and mathematics has received a lot more attention in the U.S. over the past few years. This is in response to the need to improve educational experiences for children to make them more reflective of the world in which we live. Businesses and industries have found that the workforce coming out of high school and college do not have the problem solving, communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills they need to be successful. These skills are needed for success in STEM disciplines, but also in arts, social studies, and other content areas. That’s why many schools are taking a STEAM approach (the ‘A’ is for the arts) to learning. STEAM brings the content areas together in meaningful ways, similar to how children will encounter the various disciplines in their everyday life. STEAM learning experiences harness children’s natural curiosity and provide children opportunities to develop understandings about the world around them and ensure they are better prepared for success.

One of the most important things a parent should do is to expose their child early and frequently to the use of technology. Many schools are now are moving away from traditional textbooks and moving toward the use of technology for teaching and completing assignments. Using InnoTab tablets in addition to the many great applications (apps) that are available will help them be comfortable with new technology and support STEAM learning at home. It is important for parents to select apps that focus on integrated content that emphasize creativity, problem solving, and communication.

VTech is on the cutting edge of STEAM and has launched a STEAM InnoTab Bundle. Project STEAM: Alien Rescue includes Tech Time, Alien Messenger, Spaceship Autobody, Space Plants, Clock Tower Tune Up, Pipe Pursuit, and Musical Message. Within this bundle, kids can earn STEAM badges for each level in each game that they complete. In Spaceship Recycle, kids are challenged to learn to recycle paper and metal to use as resources to construct new spaceship parts for the alien. This sorting challenge teaches children about the importance of recycling and how many of the things they use each day come from recycled materials. The Pipe Pursuit game has kids use critical thinking skills to figure out how pipes should be connected to repair the cooling system on the spaceship. Children learn about how gears work as they move through the various levels in the Clock Tower Tune-Up game. In Space Plants, important science concepts are emphasized as kids learn about plant germination and how varying amounts of water, heat, and fertilizer can support or hinder plant growth and production.

The Project STEAM: Alien Rescue bundle is a great resource to begin your child’s journey into STEAM learning, as the content is engaging, integrated, and meaningful. There is also a wide variety of other options available for the InnoTab in the areas of science, mathematics, reading and language arts, and creativity and problem solving that will enable you to create an individualized educational experience for your child and prepare them to be even more successful in school as the curriculum continues to emphasize more of a STEAM approach.
